FLYER SPLIT OVER ENQUIRER STORY

There appears to be some disagreement among Flyer staff concerning the National Enquirer’s story on John Edwards earlier this summer.

Senior Editor Jackson Baker:

This is pure Comstockery, writ large. What the hell is the National Enquirer doing, snooping around a hotel room where two consenting adults are doing whatever they’re doing? What business is it of anybody else’s? Why is the MSM admiringly preparing to creep into the same set of nocturnal shadows? This ain’t good, people.

Staff Writer Chris Davis:

Bottom line: John may have f*cked up but he isn’t the real bad guy in this piece, the National Enquirer is.

Editor Bruce VanWyngarden:

[T]hank God for the National Enquirer. They deserve a Pulitzer for saving us from the likes of Edwards…

What do you think? Pure comstockery, or Pulitzer Prize?

Now you’re gettin’ there, m’boy! You discovered the obvious: We’re not in lockstep. No by-the-numbers party line. No obligatory talking points. I rather think that’s something to be proud of. You can do it, too. Throw down your yoke of dogma and be free.

  2. M. Wright says:

Yes, I know how it works: you and Chris write in defense of a Democrat (Edwards), while Bruce writes in opposition to a Republican (Palin). Then you declare yourselves totally free of any bias or partisanship. I’ll stick with my ever-so-constrictive dogma, thanks.

Mick, I think the Flyer (one of your favorite websites) should hire you as an ombudsman. Now that would be entertainment !!!

  4. kibitzer says:

Oh, gee, Mick, I guess I need a new prescription for my glasses. I’d have sworn the quote you used from Bruce said “Edwards.” As in: “saving us from the likes of Edwards.” So he really said “Palin,” huh? Damn! I gotta get ‘em strong this time!

And Tom, it’s Mick who needs the ombudsman. Why don’t you volunteer?

  5. M. Wright says:

Perhaps you should read the article, Jacko. The full sentence reads, “They deserve a Pulitzer for saving us from the likes of Edwards and, inadvertantly [sic], Sarah Palin.” Bruce is critical of Edwards simply because he could have tipped the election in favor of Palin, deemed “the uber-subject of the week.” The article is also accompanied by a photo of Palin.
