In New Orleans, a Secondline to Violence

2010 April 17
by Mick Wright

While it’s always important to get the facts of a story correct and not jump to conclusions, I’ve become frustrated with the reluctance of many to give adequate attention to the sociopolitical context of the brutal attack on Allee Bautsch and Joe Brown last weekend in New Orleans.

Some still refuse to even entertain the possibility that the attacks may have had a political motive, despite some very strong evidence to the contrary. Further, some have used an early, errant rumor (the Palin pins), or the overall violent crime rate in the city, as an excuse to deny the legitimacy of a very real and chilling story. The dismissive treatment of this heinous attack is ignorant and wrong.

The obvious political contrast here is the media treatment of the TEA parties, which have been declared extreme and racist, and are then used as an indictment against the entire conservative movement, without even a fraction of the evidence available in this case. This story is and should be bigger than gotcha politics, but none should deny the role politics played in this crime, whether or not the assailants themselves belonged to a political party or even participated in the political rally.

While the victims’ family, the police investigators and the Governor’s staff have been justifiably restrained and conservative in their public pronouncements, it is well past time to lay out a case that the extreme Leftwing, anarchist radicals created an atmosphere of hate and violence, at the scene of the crime, targeting the very people who were attacked that night.

At this point, without further evidence, nobody should accuse the protesters who participated in the “secondline for healthcare and education” of having committed the assaults, which put Bautsch in the hospital with a broken leg and gave Brown a concussion and a fractured jaw and nose. At the same time, it would be absurd to assume that the protest played no role in creating the hostile circumstances under which these attacks took place.

If we step back and take a look at where the rally was held, what its message was, who the protest targeted, and who was involved in the march, the picture becomes very clear. Radical anarchists and Leftwing extremists, spreading a message of violence and hate, marched directly to the scene of the crime. Their target: Gov. Bobby Jindal, his “rich” friends, and Republicans.

Is it just mere coincidence, then, that the victims of this assault were Republican employees of Gov. Jindal attending an expensive fundraiser, at the exact location, and at the exact time, that the protest took place?

Is it just mere coincidence that the perpetrators purposely targeted the victims and shouted insults at them concerning “money,” as Allee’s mother claims, and their being “nicely dressed,” as the police report states?

I don’t think so.

In a previous post, I briefly described my own encounter with the protesters, who I’ve since discovered were part of the Iron Rail collective, the anarchist group who organized the march. Iron Rail rail members like Daniel Mauch and Joanna Dubinsky speak with contempt against the New Orleans Police Department, reject private property rights, and advocate a political revolution or complete overhaul of the Constitution. They are aligned with far Left socialist groups that consider as heroes people like Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx and Chairman Mao.

Here’s what Iron Rail wrote on Facebook last Friday, the night of the attack: “What an awesome action. New Orleans bared its fangs and snarled, and the rich people shat themselves in fear.

While the protesters have now removed many of their videos, web postings and photos, for what I assume to be nefarious reasons, let’s take a look at the message this protest was sending, and the dangerous environment it was creating, from the perspective of one Flickr photoset that is still online (all photos copyrighted by Jessie Jacobs):

Here’s a sign targeting “the rich.” Seems pretty innocuous on its own, and she doesn’t look too scary. But it does single out a particular group, and it’s part of a larger movement. Also, as Allee’s mother said, the attackers “were very average looking kids — not necessarily kids that you think would harm you.”

Here’s one that’s been examined by others, since the man in the center fits the police report description. But for now I want to call your attention to the sign behind his head, which appears to read, “JINDAL, tell your rich friends to GO HOME.” Note also the anarchy cape at right. In the original photo, which I’ve cropped so you can read the sign, the man on the far left is wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt.

Here’s one that targets “capitalist f*cks” instead of “the rich,” next to another that uses the same four-letter word in targeting Southern Republican Leadership Conference delegates.

This one says “SRLC the party is OVER!!!” Who’s carrying that sign?

That would be this guy, one of the five I talked to that night.

I also talked to this young man, the one on the far right. Here, he’s standing right outside the door to Brennen’s restaurant, where the fundraiser was held, and a short distance from where the attacks took place. Notice the police officer is dealing with a crowd that is pushing up against the entrance.

Just a few steps away stood Daniel Mauch, the one in the tan, long-sleeved shirt. To his right, notice the dollar sign substitution in “bull$hit,” another reference to “the rich.”

Here’s the same, now familiar scene, from the balcony of the restaurant. You can see Mauch standing near the far right.

Besides “the rich,” the main target of the march was Governor Bobby Jindal. Notice the “Stop Jindal” sign in front.

Here’s one that says “Fight the Jindal Swindle.”

Several of the protesters were wearing masks. Notice the two men covering their faces here.

Another guy covering his face. Why do you think that is?

If “Government is violence,” what is the appropriate response?

Two “Government is violence” signs. What does that message mean, do you think? What might someone do who believes that? Might they use that conviction to justify their own violence?

There were lots of anarchy symbols. Another sign I saw posted everywhere while walking around Sunday afternoon was one with Jindal’s face that read, “No Republicans! No Democrats! No politicians!” What type of ideology produces a sign like that? What kind of activities do such people sanction?

“Well used, any tool is a weapon.” Why do we need weapons, again?

Become the crisis!,” and another anarchy sign. What does “become the crisis!” mean to you?

I think we found out last Friday.

UPDATE: Words matter, says President Clinton:

Former President Bill Clinton warned of a slippery slope from angry anti-government rhetoric to violence like the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, saying “the words we use really do matter.”

The two-term Democratic president insisted he wasn’t trying to restrict free speech, but in remarks Friday he said incendiary language can be taken the wrong way by some Americans. He drew parallels to words demonizing the government before Oklahoma City.

“What we learned from Oklahoma City is not that we should gag each other or that we should reduce our passion for the positions we hold – but that the words we use really do matter, because there’s this vast echo chamber, and they go across space and they fall on the serious and the delirious alike. They fall on the connected and the unhinged alike,” he said.

“I’m glad they’re fighting over health care and everything else. Let them have at it. But I think that all you have to do is read the paper every day to see how many people there are who are deeply, deeply troubled,” he said.

He also alluded to the anti-government tea party movement, which held protests in several states Thursday. At the Washington rally, Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota railed against “gangster government.”

Remember, “Government is violence.” But that’s according to the anti-Republican NOLA protesters, not the TEA parties.

UPDATE II: Now they’re threatening me. But they’re all perfectly innocent, right?

So a push could come to a shove? Lets see what the Tea Party looks like in another three months, they are gaining traction so fast the drive by media misses the show of pure raw power. By November the Tea Party will consume the brain thrust of the Republican party.

How Ironic that the Anarchists who think “government is violence” are protesting against Republicans who voted against expanding government!

  3. April 17, 2010

Wow…just wow. I agree with keats5. Very ironic that these people would be against republicans who want limited government. Obviously these people don’t want any government at all. Or else they just want to make trouble.

I said this on The Hayride and I will repeat here.

Keep on this to see where it goes. DO NOT WAIT FOR VALIDATION from the Malkin or HotAir.com as you are not going to get it. You have little to lose and a lot to gain by getting to the truth about this.

Malkin and HotAir.com are NOT going to risk their butts for this UNLESS a LSM outlet says the attack was politically motivated. As I said over on the Hayride: It’s easy for Malkin et. Al. to cut and paste a news report then jump on the bandwagon (all the while putting it into her next book for $$$$$) while giving a thankless hat tip to you and the hayride.

Keep on this. You have little to lose and a lot to gain. If substantial evidence (right now we have circumstantial evidence that fits your hypothesis) DOES come to light that this was politically motivated then those who had doubted you are going have egg on their faces and some splain to do.

    Keep digging…

All violence is wrong. If these anarchists (NOT Dems) assaulted the woman, they should be charged.

Mich, Are you also condemning those extreme right Tea Party members who carry the ANTI Obama, Pelosi and Reed signs depicting them as Hitler or other vile insane characters? Those that spit the Black Congressmen? The right wing militias that are threatening war against our government? Palin and Bauchmann’s “violence” remarks? I recommend you show their millioins of signs and condemn their violence! Do not just show this ONE group of anarchists who are NOT democrats and say this equals out all of the extreme violence and rhetoric on the right. It doesn’t.

Until ALL Conservatives and Republicans condemn the violent and obscene antics of some of the Tea Partiers, you will NEVER, EVER have credibility again.

No, it is not. Shame on Democrats Bill Clinton and Barack Obama for instigating this violence.

SINCE WHEN do common thieves make comments about being rich b’s etc? They were not robbed but ridiculed and beaten, and that’s a hate crime. Hate crimes are committed by the left against the right.

Most thieves would just knock you down and take your money without bothering to do anything else.

What more evidence does one need?

A response for Bill Clinton: Mr. President, I completely agree that the words we use do matter, like for example when you said that the word “is” (there a sexual relationship)could not possibly mean (there) was a sexual relationship; moreover, oral sex is or was not really sex anyway. [long pregnant pause] After all, that little word “is” made all the difference in your acquittal by the Senate.

Aside from your propensity to avoid discussion of left wing violence, we see very plainly what you are doing: linking all Republicans, conservatives, and religous people to the violence of Timothy McVeigh. And we further note that you’ve never even gotten your facts right about Tim McVeigh. TM was neither a Republican, a conservative, nor was he, so far as has been determined, ever a member of any so-called right wing group or militia, unless you want to count Terry Nichols as the other member of the militia. McVeigh was a Roman Catholic. He was angry that the army denied his application to Special Forces training, and like the moron he was, he took it out on a whole lot of innocent folks including children in OK City. If TM had a political agenda, I never heard of it, unless you are willing to say now that you know, as former President that he was a registered Republican. In short, Bill, hate is an equal opportunity employer, as we can now plainly see after this incident in New Orleans.

And if anything, the protesters seem more on message than the SRLC do; the kids were organized, had legible signs, and had a peaceful message condemning greed, corporatism and social regression.

Again I think a conservative homophobe (redundant?) bashed the guy and his beard…er I mean girlfriend.

Still parroting the DemocRAT lie that the Tea Partiers spat on congress-liars and called them names? You and your friends take the “innocent until proven guilty” stance about this felonious assault and then turn around and repeat charges against the Tea Party which have been unsubstantiated even though there is a $100k reward for evidence.

What I want to know is why, in a state where concealed weapons permits are issued to any law-abiding adult, and in a city where crime rates are so high, why was this man not carrying a firearm to protect his girlfriend and himself? Only one or two of these hyenas would have to be justifiably blown to hell to intimidate all the other ones forevermore.

I was in New Orleans last Friday night and I saw these morons. I crossed the street right in front of their march. When I heard them chanting and saw the signs they were carrying I stopped my friends as we watched them go by. Little did I know one block over was Brennan’s restaurant where these idiotic libs would show their violent side. If I had any idea I would have been right in the middle of it. I had three friends with me. Three of us are big guys that tip the scales between 250 and 270 lbs. The outcome of that attack would have been much different if we had been there. I am VERY sorry we weren’t.

Great pics! You capture the anger and frustrations of youth in New Orleans. No doubt some of this anger overflowed into the streets and the two Young Republicans were innocent victims of a purposeful, brutal attack.

However, your investigative journalism leaves much to be desired. In fact, it is so spotty I almost mistook it for a Dalmation. As a citizen journalist, I feel qualified to say this.

In my latest blogpost, I outline 13 reasons why the photo above of the targeted “suspect” is not even close to conclusive.

I also analyze the theory that a police investigation has been compromised by amateur sleuths.

    http://tonsofwash.wordpress.com/2010/04/20/new-orleans-political-beating-suspect-victim-of-a-witch-hunt/

  32. April 20, 2010

In fact, as a person with a background in both criminal justice and law, I will say that anyone who presented a pic of a suspected perpetrator to the victim without the express consent of the New Orleans police, may be guilty of interference with a police investigation. Now the victim will NOT be able to view a police line up, or book of mugs, with this suspect included. The investigation has been compromised. You in deep doo.

Disclaimer: I am not a cop, nor an attorney. I am not authorize to practice law and do not offer legal advice. In no way am I intended to speak with authority. Do your own damn research. ;)

This is so amusing to me and at the same time sad. This worthless shit in the streets is breathing air that some poor sewer rat needs . Take a good long look at them ! Filth, inside and out . No scum such as these ever employed anyone . As for the minister, leftist churches have been a problem for far to long. Revelations speaks of the churches that will not enter into Heaven . GOD has waged war against HIS enemies and will continue to do so . GOD has put our enemies among us . When CHRIST told the ” money changers ” that their father was the devil . HE meant just that ! Investigate who dominates all media, print, entertainment, gambling, banking, pornography and government . Satan is extremely intelligent and cunning. He was here before CHRIST . This is his world. You’ve been hoodwinked, bamboozled, tricked . Now go ahead and rip on me, it’s okay. I know who wins in the end and that is all that matters . Just remember, CHRIST returns as a warrior !
